This is your time to shine

We are living in a time of unprecedented change.

  • The scope and speed of change defies anything you might ever have imagined.

  • The acceleration of the climate crisis and the ambitious goals are in slow motion in comparison to the coronavirus response.

  • Whereas governments and industries were setting carbon emissions goals for only 2050, they are now closing down countries with a week's notice!

There is good news in all of this. 

  • We have all learned that drastic measures can be taken in the face of a global crisis.

  • We can surrender luxury in the interests of humanity.

However, we have had to surrender control to our governments.  That is necessary but not comfortable.

Actions that would have brought on waves of protest are not. However, many people are struggling internally, and this can affect our mental health. 

We need to make the most of this time of lockdowns and social isolation by taking control of those things we can control.  To do this you need to find a purpose, a goal, and meaning in this turmoil.



Psychologist Martin Seligman uses the acronym PERMA to list these factors contributing to 'the good life', happiness.

  • Positive emotion

  • Engagement

  • Relationships

  • Meaning

  • Accomplishment

Happiness is a slippery concept. Sometimes it seems to us like the Holy Grail: mythical, wonderful, but ultimately unobtainable. Positive Psychology suggests that happiness is more than obtainable. It is the natural result of building up our well-being and satisfaction with life. Seligman spent many years developing a theory of happiness. He wanted to identify the building blocks of well-being. He drew up his five-sided model of well-being called the PERMA model.
These are the five elements he found essential to human well-being. Each of these elements is essential to our well-being and satisfaction with life. Together, they form the solid foundation upon which we can build a happy and flourishing life.

I can't help but go down the route of a call to empathy in all of our challenges getting used to this new world of work in the midst of total disruption of our non-work lives.

A New Understanding of Happiness and Wellbeing

Martin Seligman is considered the father of Positive Psychology.  Ten years after he wrote Authentic Happiness he published Flourish.  Whereas Authentic Happiness focused on overall satisfaction with life, Flourish focuses on the five elements of life of:

  • Positive Emotion,

  • Engagement,

  • Meaning,

  • Positive Relationships and

  • Accomplishment.
