SMARTER GOALS

Clarify - Commit - Communicate - Celebrate

GOAL IDENTIFICATION

Investigate - Evaluate - Commit

Goals provide motivation for us. In several sporting contexts we aim at goals, goal posts and the goal line. Whereas the rules are the parameters within which we play, the goal is the point of focus. The aim is always to score more goals than the opposition, or if the goal (pardon the pun) is to achieve a target number of points or more points than the opposition, then the goal is the accumulation of those points.
Whatever metaphor or analogy you use; a clearly defined goal provides a clear target and provides a measure of progress towards achievement of a particular victory. The GROW Model facilitates the thought process of:

GOAL DEFINITION

Clarity - Focus - Motivation

A clearly defined goal motivates us.

A SMART goal is just that:

  • Specific

  • Measurable

  • Aligned

  • Realistic

  • Timely

GOAL ACCOMPLISHMENT

Support - Challenge - Encouragement

Getting going and staying the course in pursuit of the SMART goal can be difficult, even if easy at the start. Whether the goal is set in the glow of New Year’s inspiration, or born of a competitive rush of blood to the head, or in the spirit of adventure, there is a good chance that hurdles are going to present themselves along the way.

This is where you need friends, family, coaches, mentors and even the competition to challenge you to overcome the obstacles. Who do you have cheering in your corner? Are you in someone’s corner, championing their cause?

There are four key practices that you can put in place for yourself, or for others.

  • Share the vision,

  • Create incentives and rewards,

  • Invite feedback,

  • Establish accountability.
